This narrative is about our second year living in the Northern Mariana Islands fifty years ago. To start the story at the beginning, please listen to Year 1. Only seven of the audio tapes sent to our family between Sept 1976 and August 1977 have survived, so this is far from complete.
We had moved to government housing at no 1 Navy Hill with the Ada family as our closest neighbors. Lisa was starting 2nd grade at Mt Carmel School. Her teacher was Mrs. Martin. I was continuing in my job as Coordinator of the Bilingual Project, funded by US Title VII Federal grant for Chamorro/English classrooms in 16 classrooms grades 1-5 for which we designed the program & lesson plans, developed materials, provided training, evaluated, and involved the community. We had support from many trainers and consultants. Over the year we also worked to meet the needs of the Carolinian community seeking and receiving funds for a Title VII Carolinian/English Project. The Northern Marianas were in the process of moving from being administered by the US Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands to becoming a US Commonwealth. Lisa took part in many of the activities and parties that were part of my work. She had learned how to make her own audio tapes and In June records a creative (and not totally true) narrative pretending she is a reporter for CBS News in a segment stating with “It is time for a CBS News Break” She was just turning 7 years old. So I am Kit Porter now 80-years-old and glad to be able to share some of our life in the NMI.
