These Carolinian adornments were presented to Bill and Kit in May 2018 by Cinta Kaipat, Lino Olopai and Joe (Ping) Limes.

Special Thanks

So many people have helped with this project in so many ways.  It is probable that without their help the documents, photos, audio tapes and items would have been thrown away.  Certainly, the inventories, website, YouTube stories and other stories would not have been created.

Our hope is that people who care about the Mariana Islands and Micronesia will continue to seek, collect and preserve content -- especially from those who are getting older.

These two dolls were handmade. Kit purchased them at a small craft store on Saipan. The dolls are wearing clothes that Kit may remember old women on Rota occasionally wearing for special occasions.

Special organizations & groups

Over the years (1983 to 2022)  we have been in contact with many organizations and groups concerning the collection.  We started this project with dedication to the idea of conserving and sharing but with no experience in preserving and archiving.  The professional insights of people at these organizations and groups facilitated our work.

Responses

We would not have continued with this website without the encouragement and responses from many many people. You will understand how important they have been as you read them.

The BoJo Dolls were given to Kit by Lydia Taisian, her friend since 1967. They were made on Rota using local seeds.

Others we've heard from

Each response to the website and stories was important and helped us continue the work.  The responses meant we were achieving the goal of sharing a special time in history with the people, families and descents of those involved as well those interested.

Most of these seed and shell necklaces were made by the girls on Rota in the 1960s. They would gather, clean, design and string their creations to give and share with others.
