The people of Micronesia/US Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) hosted Peace Corps Volunteers starting in 1967 in the then named districts: Marshall Islands, Ponapae, Truk, Northern Mariana Islands (NMI), Yap, & Palau. In 1978 the NMI became a US Commonwealth and PC ceased sending PCVs to the CNMI.
This site shares content as provided by PCVs/staff/trainers who served between 1967 and 1978. The site was founded in 2016 by Kit Porter Van Meter, NMI PCV, to share her photos with the people of Rota where she lived from 1967-1969. With support from Micronesia PC volunteers/staff/trainers, friends and the Northern Marianas Humanities Council the site now includes stories, remembrances, photos, videos, audio, Youtube stories, documents, art, articles & reports related to PC in Micronesia.
On this site, you can learn from Tom Zink about PCVs working on the 1969 MicrOlympic Games on Saipan; John Whitbeck shares about the boat he was in sinking on the way to Tinian; Jim Moses shows & writes about Japanese artifacts and ampules found on Tinian; George Will tells about fishing with his “tata’; and Fay Nelson shares a video & photos from Rota. More than twenty RPCVs share their photographs, videos and stories
Kit Porter Van Meter and Michael Sousa have made just a few additions to the website since March 2020 (COVID). They have been adapting the website to add new additions from RPCVs since they designed and launched it in 2016. Now in 2024, at age 80, Kit plans to archive the website. If you are interested in continuing it, contact us.
Additional documents & content related to Micronesia and Oceania are in KPV Collection.
