Memories of Pedro (Pete) Maratita Ogo
from John Philips & Rosemary Casey
(Submitted September 28, 2018)

Pete Ogo (Rota, 1968)
  • Memory from John Philips
"I got to know Pete in 1966 when he was a language informant and I was a Peace Corps trainee in the Micro II/Marianas program on Molokai, Hawaii.  In 1968, when I became the language coordinator for the Micro VII/Marianas training program on Rota, he was one of the language informants I recruited.  In my final report on the program I wrote the following:
'Pete is a pro.  He’s a good technician and he combines this ability with imaginative teaching.  His total understanding of the language cannot be questioned because of his involvement with the writing of the text  His background and experience make him eligible for some administrative position in a future Chamorro language program — perhaps language coordinator.  He’s currently a teacher at Rota School.'
"
  • Memory from Rosemary Casey
"I remember Pete as the "go to" person during our training for any questions about grammar or pronunciation. He was the lead language informant and his lessons were really good. I finished training with a pretty good ability in Chamorro, a 3 on the 5-point scale, thanks in great part to Pete's ability to explain how the language worked. As a teacher at Rota School, Pete was my second principal - Isaac Calvo being the first, but Pete being a junior high teacher - my assigned area also. He was always fun to be around and continued to be a source on the language throughout my time on Rota."
